Portrait by Emily Fishman
Ben Janse’s work has appeared or is forthcoming in Granta, Pif Magazine, F(r)iction and others. He completed a masters in Creative Writing at The New School in 2013 and has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. He lives in Brooklyn with his poison dart frogs.
Janse's short story "Abscond!" appears within Issue No. 1 - Summer 2017 of Curlew Quarterly and begins on page 136. The story is set in New York, though it chronicles eleven individuals' experiences as they decide to and then go about fleeing from the noise and chaos of the city.
Janse's story blends nature with the city and vice-versa in ways that capture and delight the imagination, and also describes events and experiences within the city ––– at work, or otherwise ––– which are easy to relate with.
In this very first episode of Curlew Weekly, Janse sits down with Curlew Quarterly's founder and editor, Isaac Myers III, and reads the story in its entirety.
A brief interview follows.
